Shari Koehler, director of professional development for the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), has announced her retirement effective June 17, after nearly 27 years with the association.

Koehler joined the GCSAA staff in January 1996 and served in several roles on the publications and professional development teams before becoming director of education operations in July 2002 (her title changed to director, professional development, in January 2009). During her tenure, Koehler led the strategic direction of professional development initiatives, including domestic and international in-language continuing education programs, conference education, career services and had oversight over two certification and certificate programs. In the last few years, she oversaw the expanded virtual education opportunities necessitated by the pandemic.

“I’ve been honored to serve the GCSAA membership and provide professional development programs to enhance the careers of superintendents, assistants, equipment managers and crew for more than 26 years,” Koehler said. “I value the relationships I’ve made in the industry and truly wish the profession well in the future.”

Prior to and during her time at GCSAA, Koehler had extensive experience in curriculum development and design, training, for-profit business and association management.

“For more than a quarter century at GCSAA, Shari has been directly responsible for helping superintendents and others expand their knowledge and grow their careers,” said Rhett Evans, GCSAA CEO. “Shari has exemplified our mission of serving our members and advancing their profession. We will miss her a great deal, but we wish her the best as she enters a well-earned retirement.”

Koehler plans to remain in Lawrence, Kan., upon her retirement. In her absence, professional development inquiries to GCSAA can be directed to Shelia Finney, senior manager, member programs, at 800-472-7878, ext. 4472, or sfinney@gcsaa.org.
